Colloidal Dynamics Pty Ltd was founded in 1986 in Sydney, Australia by Dr. Richard O’Brien, Dr. Robert Hunter and Dr. James Beattie to commercialize Dr. O’Brien’s theory and patent for determining particle size and zeta potential from multi-frequency Electroacoustic measurements in concentrated colloids. Collaborating with Mr. David Cannon, who discovered and patented the ESA Electroacoustic effect in 1983, a joint venture was formed with Mr. Cannon’s US company, Matec Applied Sciences (Matec). Together the companies introduced the AcoustoSizer I instrument in 1993, the world’s first laboratory instrument for measuring particle size and zeta potential in concentrated colloids. That year the AcoustoSizer won R&D Magazine’s coveted R&D 100 Award that honors the 100 most technologically significant new commercial products, technologies, and materials available for sale or license each year. Colloidal Dynamics Pty Ltd acquired Matec’s rights in the joint venture in 1996. Mr. Cannon joined the company and formed Colloidal Dynamics, Inc as the US headquarters and manufacturing site for the new Colloidal Dynamics. We introduced our ZetaProbe zeta potential analyzer in 2003 along with a new model of the AcoustoSizer, the AcoustoSizer II. The AcoustoSizer II added the Ultrasonic Attenuation Spectroscopy technique as an additional particle size method for the instrument. The ZetaProbe was developed to provide an easy to use titration workhorse for measuring zeta potential in a wide range of concentrated slurries well suited for QC applications. In 2009 Colloidal Dynamics was acquired by Agilent Technologies, Inc as part of Agilent’s expansion in the materials characterization market. Mr. Cannon purchased the business from Agilent in July 2009 and re-established it as Colloidal Dynamics LLC locating it in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The current model of the AcoustoSizer is the AcoustoSizer IIx, a 3rd generation device that uses new advanced high speed digital signal processing technology providing enhanced measurement speed and accuracy.
Colloidal Dynamics is located in sunny Ponte Vedra Beach on Florida’s northeast Atlantic coast midway between Jacksonville and St. Augustine also known as Florida’s First Coast. The company operates from a 2,700 sq ft facility where we carry out manufacturing, engineering, sales and support from this single location.
